CONVERSATIONS WITH NATURE

In Conversations with Nature, Clare Ross collects natural forms that have died or begun to decay, reconstructing them in her studio and sometimes incorporating discarded plastic. These physical constructions are then photographed, creating imagined specimens of a natural world altered by human intervention.

Ross writes: “I can never achieve the perfection that these plants achieved alone in the natural world, but instead they take on new physical forms and communicate a message about what happens when people’s immediate goals and desires impact negatively on nature.”

With particular attention to colour, light and sculptural form, Ross creates photographs that explore the contradictory human impulses to preserve nature and to alter it for our own comfort.
